    Why Hire Veterans?

    Presenter: Michelle Hayes

    Michelle Hayes joined the Department of Veterans Affairs in October 2011 as a Regional Veterans Employment Coordinator.  Her region currently consists of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and the Houston, Texas area. She was commissioned into the U.S. Army as an Ordnance (Maintenance) Officer through ROTC at Louisiana State University. She is an Operation Desert Storm Veteran, where she deployed with the VII Corps support units out of southern Germany. After completing her company command at Fort Hood, Texas, Michelle left active military service to work in logistics with Allied Signal.

    In 1998, she returned to the defense industry as a logistics support contractor, and in 2002, she relocated home to New Orleans, Louisiana where she was a consultant for the U.S. Navy. She also served as adjunct faculty for Tulane University’s College of Continuing Studies.

    Following Hurricane Katrina, Michelle worked for Harrah’s New Orleans Casino and Hotel, first as the employment manager and later as the employee relations and internal communications manager before joining the VA.

    Michelle holds a master’s of science in human resources management from Troy University and is a certified professional in human resources (PHR).

    This program has been approved for 1.0 HR recertification credit hours by the HR Certification Institute.  It was also approved for 1.0 PDC recertification credit hour toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications.
